How Ballet Helps Babies and Toddlers Develop Motor Skills

Did you know that ballet can be a powerful tool for your baby or toddler’s development? Beyond the graceful moves and twirls, ballet offers a unique way to foster essential motor skills during the early years of life. From improving balance and coordination to boosting strength and flexibility, ballet engages little ones in creative, structured movement that supports both their physical and cognitive growth.

Whether it’s their first plié or a playful spin, introducing your child to ballet early on can have lasting benefits. In this blog, we’ll explore how ballet helps babies and toddlers develop key motor skills, and why baby ballet is the perfect activity for nurturing their growing bodies and minds.

What’s the Difference: Fine and Gross Motor Skills Development in Early Years

As your child learns to move in different ways, there are two key areas of motor development that they’re working on: fine motor skills and gross motor skills.

Gross Motor Skills Activities

Gross motor skills are where your child coordinates their brain with their larger muscles such as those in their arms, legs and torso, to move their whole body. Examples of gross motor skill activities include rolling, crawling, walking, skipping and twirling. Each child gains confidence in these gross motor skills at different rates, reaching milestones such as their first steps or first roll at their own pace. We cherish these early steps at babyballet, offering babies and toddlers gentle words of encouragement and patience as they begin to explore the world around them.

Fine Motor Skills Activities

From pulling on their ballet shoes to picking up the colourful scarves in class for a fun game of peek-a-boo, fine motor skills are all about small movements in the body. Fine motor skills activities involve children connecting between the brain and nervous system, using small muscles found in, for example, their little hands, feet, fingers, toes and faces to coordinate movements.

Does ballet help babies and toddlers to develop key motor skills?

Well, the short answer is yes! Our babyballet classes are designed with your baby and toddler’s development in mind.

Your child can join our Tots ballet classes from as young as 6 months old! Right from the early days of tummy time, rolling, bottom-shuffling and crawling, your little one will love exploring our sensory-filled classes. Our ballet classes for babies offer a gentle introduction to music and dance for your little one. They’re also the perfect opportunity to meet other local grown-ups with children of a similar age too!

When your toddler reaches 18 months old, they’ll be ready for our much-loved Tinies classes! In these fun-filled and lively classes, imagination is at the forefront. Children love taking their first steps through the jungle, tip- toeing over the clouds and picking up their magical paintbrush to draw a great big rainbow. Our specially selected range of high-quality toys and resources encourage children to play, explore movement and have lots of fun!

Can ballet dance continue to support my preschooler’s motor development?

From 3 years old, your growing baby ballet star is bound to love our Movers classes, a dance class designed especially for preschoolers. Children gain confidence in the higher-level physical movements involving a greater degree of coordination, balance and flexibility. In our imaginative storytelling-filled sessions, children learn how to combine more advanced physical motor skills such as skipping, twirling, hopping and leaping. Remember your little one can also join our upbeat Tappers class from the age of 3, offering a whole new sensory treat!

Motor skill development doesn’t stop when your child reaches school age. From four and a half years old, your baby ballet star can continue to perfect and practice their dance skills in our Groovers classes. It’s the ideal route for children who want to continue to enjoy improving their skills, making friends and having fun in a non-competitive and supportive environment.
