World Ballet Day 2024

It’s so much more than dancing…

For years, dancers have worn pink ballet tights and pink pointe shoes.

In 2015, Misty Copeland became the first African American woman to dance as a principal in the American Ballet Theatre.

In November 2023, she went viral with a TikTok video sharing how she, like many other dancers, must paint her pointe shoes to match her skin tone – a process called ‘pancaking.’

We want to help create a world where ballet accepts everyone.

Last year, babyballet joined forces with The TIRED Movement on their mission to unite the dance community, creating a world that, “Allows dancers of all ethnic backgrounds to feel fully represented.” In August 2023, we partnered up with the brilliant minds behind Shades Dancewear , who supply us with our beautiful range of skin-toned ballet shoes and socks, available to buy from our babyballet store.

At babyballet, creating a space for everyone to enjoy dance has been our driving force for the past 19 years.

So, this World Ballet Day, we’re making three really important promises to our little baby ballet stars:

We promise to continue to stand up for better representation in the dance world. That starts with our children seeing more dancers who look like themselves.

We promise to continue to listen and include. Every week, around 20,000 little stars dance through the doors of a babyballet class and are made to feel welcome. Inclusion looks different from child-to-child but through our can-do attitude and commitment to continuous development as a team, we strive for every family to feel that they belong in our classes.

We promise to never stop using our powerful voice to speak up and take positive action, making the world a better place for all our little stars.
